Albert Einstien Essays - Albert Einstein, Special Relativity

Albert Einstien Essays - Albert Einstein, Special Relativity Albert Einstien People of Science Albert Einstein Early Life Einstein was conceived in Ulm, Germany on Mar. 14, 1879. Einstein's folks, who were non attentive Jews, moved from Ulm to Munich, Germany when Einstein was a newborn child. The privately-owned company was the production of electrical parts. At the point when the business fizzled, in 1894, the family moved to Milan, Italy. As of now Einstein concluded formally to end his German citizenship. Inside a year, still without having finished optional school, Einstein bombed an assessment that would have permitted him to seek after a course of study prompting a recognition as an electrical specialist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. He spent the following year in close by Aarau at the cantonal auxiliary school, where he appreciated phenomenal instructors and first-rate offices in quite a while. Einstein returned in 1896 to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he graduated, in 1900 as an auxiliary teacher of arithmetic and material science. Following two years he got a post at the Swiss patent office in Bern. The patent-office work required Einstein's cautious consideration, yet while utilized (1902-1909) there, he finished a surprising scope of distributions in hypothetical material science. Generally these writings were written in his extra time and without the advantage of close contact with either the logical writing or theoretician associates. Einstein submitted one of his logical papers to the University of Zurich to acquire a Ph.D. degree in 1905. In 1908 he sent a second paper to the University of Bern and turned into a speaker there. The following year Einstein got a standard arrangement as partner educator of material science at the University of Zurich. By 1909, Einstein was perceived all through German-speaking Europe as a main logical mastermind. With hardly a pause in between he held residencies at the German University of Prague and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. In 1914 he progressed to the most renowned and best-paying post that a hypothetical physicist could hold in focal Europe, educator at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Gesellschaft in Berlin. The 1905 papers In the first of three papers that were distributed in 1905, Einstein inspected the marvel found by Max Planck, as indicated by which electromagnetic vitality appeared to be produced from transmitting objects in amounts that were eventually discrete. The vitality of these transmitted amounts, the alleged light-quanta was straightforwardly relative to the recurrence of the radiation. This situation was bewildering on the grounds that traditional electromagnetic hypothesis, in light of Maxwell's conditions and the laws of thermodynamics, had expected that electromagnetic vitality comprised of waves spreading in a speculative, all-inescapable medium called the luminiferous ether, and that the waves could contain any measure of vitality regardless of how little. Einstein utilized Planck's quantum speculation to portray obvious electromagnetic radiation, or light. As indicated by Einstein's ingenious perspective, light could be envisioned to comprise of discrete packs of radiation. Einstei n utilized this translation to clarify the photoelectric impact, by which certain metals emanate electrons when enlightened by light with a given recurrence. Einstein's hypothesis, and his ensuing elaboration of it, framed the reason for quite a bit of quantum mechanics. The second of Einstein's 1905 papers proposed what is today called the unique hypothesis of relativity. At the time Einstein realized that, as indicated by Hendrik Antoon Lorentz's hypothesis of electrons, the mass of an electron expanded as the speed of the electron moved toward the speed of light. Einstein likewise realized that the electron hypothesis, in light of Maxwell's conditions, conveyed alongside it the suspicion of a luminiferous ether, yet that endeavors to identify the physical properties of the ether had not succeeded. Einstein understood that the conditions depicting the movement of an electron in truth could portray the nonaccelerated movement of any molecule or any appropriately characterized inflexible body. He put together his new kinematics with respect to a reevaluation of the traditional guideline of relativity, that the laws of material science needed to have a similar structure in any casing of reference. As a second key speculation, Einstein accepted that th e speed of light stayed consistent in all casings of reference, as required by traditional Maxwellian hypothesis. Einstein deserted the speculation of the ether, for it assumed no job in his kinematics or in his reevaluation of Lorentz's hypothesis of electrons. As an outcome of his hypothesis Einstein recuperated the marvel of time dilatation,

The Tragic Impermanence of Youth in Robert Frosts Nothing Gold Can Sta

The Tragic Impermanence of Youth in Robert Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay In his sonnet Nothing Gold can Stay, Robert Frost names youth and its traits as priceless. Utilizing nature for instance, Frost relates the most punctual green of an infant plant to gold; its first leaves are likened with blossoms. Notwithstanding, to hold something as momentary as youth in the most elevated of regards is to set one's self up for disaster. The laws of the Universe cast the wonders of youth into an irrefutable condition of fleetingness. All that is conceived, unadulterated and clean, will be contaminated with age and kick the bucket. The maturing procedure that Frost portrays is intended to be taken actually just as allegorically. Truly, the plants that Frost portrays are a case of this nonexclusive law of maturing. This prooving through regular common phenomenom the substantial and logical value of the sonnet. There is likewise a profound comprehension. Ice utilizes a strict mention to additionally implement the target of the poem.Whether Frost's contention is demons trated in a strict or logical gathering, it is in any case obvious. In straightforwardly refering to these common events from lifeless, natural things, for example, plants, he additionally in a roundabout way tends to the marvels of maturing in people, in both physical and profound regards. Actually, this is a sonnet discribing the seasons. Ices interpertation of the seasons is unique in the way that it isn't just fall that causes him sadness, yet summer. Spring is depicted as agonizingly brisk in its retirement; Her initial leaf's a blossom,/But just so 60 minutes.. Most would relate summer as a season overflowing with life, maybe the acknowledgment of what was started in spring. As Frost preceives it notwithstanding, from the second spring... ...f polluting influence. In Christianity it is called sin. The way that contamination of the spirit is an idea in religion the world over is a demonstration of the Universal idea of Frosts contention. Ice's sonnet tends to the lamentable fleeting nature of living things; from the snapshot of origination, we are ever-striding towards death. Ice offers no solution for the widespread ailment of maturing; no answer for the way that the greatness of youth keeps going one minute. He only focuses on composing a thought of what he comprehends to be a reality, anyway heartbreaking. The burden of disappointment that Frost experiences can't be treated in any unmistakable manner. Ice's reaction is to decline to quietly clasp to the apparently savage behaviors that most people find acceptable. He assaults the offender of maturing the main way one can assault the mysterious powers of the universe, by naming it as the catastrophe that it seems to be.

Peek Over Our Shoulders What Rioters Are Reading March 29, 2018

Peek Over Our Shoulders What Rioters Are Reading March 29, 2018 In this regular feature, we give you a glimpse of what we are reading this very moment. Here is what the Rioters are reading today (as in literally today). This is what’s on their bedside table (or the floor, work bag, desk, whatevskis). Your TBR list is about to get some new additions. We’ve shown you ours, now show us yours; let us know what you’re reading (right this very moment) in the comment section below! Jamie Canaves A Necessary Evil (Sam Wyndham #2) by Abir Mukherjee: I loved A Rising Man which introduced Sam Wyndham: a former Scotland Yard detective now working as a Captain in British ruled Calcutta (1919). Since finishing the first in the series I’ve been anticipating the sequel and so far there’s more of Sergeant Banerjee which is all I was hoping for! (egalley) Grace Lapointe Mudbound by Hillary Jordan: I recently watched the Netflix movie and loved the story, performances, characters, and themes. (paperback) Claire Handscombe I Love You Too Much by Alicia Drake: my publicist friend at Little, Brown sent this Paris-set book to me ages ago and it sounded right up my streetâ€"a short melancholic novel by a British author who lived in France for a long time, which feels, in a charming way, almost like a translation. Really like it so far. (ARC) Liberty Hardy Temper by Nicky Drayden (Harper Voyager, August 7): By the author of the bananapants novel Prey of the Godsâ€"how could I not read this??? This one is promising to be a blend of scifi, horror, magic, and dark humor. My body is ready. (egalley) Rebecca Hussey Feel Free by Zadie Smith: I am loving these essays. Smith is a master of the essay form. These pieces are wide-ranging, smart, and worth lingering over. I’m reading a library copy, but I’m going to buy this to have it on my shelves. (library hardcover) Katherine Marciniak The Ghost Engine by Theresa Fuller: I got to beta read this book a while ago and now it’s out for real! (paperback) Tiffani Willis Royally Screwed by Emma Chase: I am so excited to start this trilogy! I can’t resist a royal love story. Anthony Karcz Infinity by Various: Im rereading the entire collected crossover saga on Marvel Unlimited. I thought it was because I wanted to prepare myself for the upcoming Infinity War movie, but apparently its because Im a masochist. Erin McCoy Heart of Steel by Meljean Brook: I have taken a deep dive into the world of steampunk romances lately and if one thing is certain, it’s a good place to be! On my journey through steampunk romancelandia there is no book that I’ve encountered thus far that I like more than Heart of Steel. Yasmeen and Archimedes are completely delightful together and Brook’s writing coupled with Faye Adele’s narration is pretty close to perfection. (audiobook) S.W. Sondheimer Exo by Fonda Lee: I enjoyed Lee’s newest “adult” novel, Jade City, quite a bit so I decided to delve into her back catalog. Exo is one of her YA books, set after the alien conquest of Earth and during the revolution that follows. I have great expectations; after hearing her speak on several panels at ECCC, I can assure you this lady knows how to write a revolution. Susie Dumond Cork Dork by Bianca Bosker: My dad recommended this to me in preparation for an upcoming trip to California wine country. Bosker is a journalist and wine enthusiast who delved into the world of sommeliers and other wine professionals to learn more about what makes wine so unique. I’m always looking for ways to be a more educated wine drinker! (paperback) Elizabeth Allen I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara: In 2016, Michelle McNamara died unexpectedly at the age of 46. She had a long career as a crime writer and creator of the successful blog True Crime Diary and was in the midst of writing what would come to be her final true crime account. Her husband, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, has said that he suspected the long nights, insomnia, and anxiety as a result of writing this book caused her to take the lethal combination of Xanax, fentanyl, and Adderall that led to her untimely death. As Oswalt learned to be a widower and a single parent, he also made sure that his beloved wife’s life’s work would not be lost to time. And I’m glad it wasn’t. Her tale of the history of the Golden State Killer is a master class in research and a dogged obsession with something most people find distasteful (something I completely relate to). Not only is she an excellent narrative writer , but her details are impeccable. If you are interested in true crime, I suggest you pick up this book immediately. (audiobook) Katie McLain My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris: I started reading this graphic novel for an episode of Read or Dead, and I’m in the last half now because it is first of all an ENORMOUS book, but it is also gorgeous and dark and haunting and whimsical and Emil Ferris’s cross-hatched illustrations are so detailed and mesmerizing! I love the way the story feels like it was composed in a giant notebook, and as a bonus, every time I have to turn the book sideways to see something, I get in a mini arm workout! (paperback graphic novel) Christina Vortia Halsey Street by Naima Coster: I was very excited that this book was voted on as The Blerd Book Club book of the month. This book has been on my to read list, so I’m very happy to have moved it up my to read list. (audio CD) Adiba Jaigirdar Ayesha At Last by Uzma Jalaluddin: When I first heard of this book it was described as a Pride and Prejudice reboot with Muslim and South Asian protagonists. Obviously, I was totally hooked. But so far Ayesha At Last is so much more than a Pride and Prejudice reboot. It takes on its own identity that, while sometimes borrowing from the classic book, is totally its own! It also has such varied perspectives on Islam and being a Muslim, along with arranged marriages. Plus, both the protagonistsâ€"Ayesha and Khalidâ€"are lovable, relatable, and infuriating in their own way. (egalley) Heather Bottoms Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman: I am a bit late in life getting introduced to fantasy novels, but I am trying to stretch a bit and enjoy new genres. It seems crazy that I’ve never read a Neil Gaiman book. Several friends suggested that Neverwhere is a great place to start. So I checked out the audiobook from my local library and am about halfway through. It is just a rollicking good time and I am enjoying it tremendously. I’m not usually a fan of fiction authors narrating their own books, but he does a marvelous job on this one. Looking forward to seeing how it ends! (audiobook) Rachel Brittain The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton: I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump the past few weeks, so I knew I needed something really great to pull me out. As soon as I saw that my library had this book on Hoopla I knew I had to read it. I’ve heard a lot of good things (and seen it showing up all over Book Riot), so I’m really hoping this book will be exactly what I need to get back into my reading groove. (library ebook) Christina Orlando Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi: I love Oyeyemi’s other work (What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours is a masterpiece) and so I’m finally getting around to reading Boy, Snow, Bird. Anything written by her feels like a masterclass in craft and so I’m soaking in the complexities of the story. This novel follows protagonist Boy Novak as she deals with issues of race, family, and finding herself. So far it’s incredible. Alison Doherty Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas: I am a big A Court of Thorns and Roses fan (team Rhys forever!!!) so it’s surprising that it’s taken me so long to pick up Maas’s first series, especially because it’s beloved by so many friends. This story featuring a teenage assassin trying to win her freedom in a royal killing competition is compulsively readable. With short chapters, loads of action, and so much romantic angst, I’m having to remind myself to put it down so I can enjoy my spring break vacation. Katisha Smith Kirsten and Ally (Part 1 of 2) by Shelby Lamb: The author submitted a review request, and I happily accepted. I am almost finished with the book, and it seems like a setup of all the main characters. I think all of the real action will occur in the second book. What I am enjoying most are the different points of view and the unique layout and format of the book. (ebook) Margaret Kingsbury     The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert: It seems like everyone is talking about this book, and it’s exactly the kind of book I gravitate towardâ€"fairy tales, a story within a story, a creepy forest. The synopsis kind of reminds me of Holly Black’s books (which I love). (library ebook) Laura Sackton The Sparsholt Affair by Alan Hollinghurst: A multigenerational epic beginning with the friendship of two young men at Oxford in the 1940s and spanning several decades into the present day? Sign me up. I live for books like this. I also loved The Line of Beauty, so I put this one on hold as soon as I heard about it. (library hardcover) Priya Sridhar Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull: I’m reading this book to reconcile my disappointment at Pixar, Inc, with my admiration for its dedication to story. Kindle also had a good deal on it. For all the contentions with how the company has handled John Lasseter’s misdeeds, Pixar raised the bar for animation and heart. (Kindle ebook) Patricia Elzie-Tuttle Tough Mothers by Jason Porath: This is the newest book from the author of Rejected Princesses, a book I absolutely love. I met him at a party and he bestowed me with an advanced copy of Tough Mothers and I’ve been happy to dive right in. Loving it so far. (hardcover) Derek Attig State Tectonics  by Malka Older: The first book in this series (Infomocracy) was my pick for the best book of 2016, and the second (Null States) was just as awesome. So of course I leapt at the chance to read State Tectonics, the series conclusion out in September from Tor. And so far it’s really damn delightful. Older’s ideas still crackle with electricity as she spins out a future for democracy that only gets more fascinatingâ€"and tantalizingâ€"as time goes on. Alysia Stevenson Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: Yaa’s debut novel came out in 2016 and I feel like a dope for not discovering it sooner. It tells the stories of the descendants of two half-sisters from Ghana in the 18th century. Neither knows that the other exists; one sister stays in Ghana while the other is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Each chapter follows a different descendent leading up to the 1990s. It’s such a beautiful novel and I can’t wait to read more for Gyasi. My brother suggested the book to me after seeing a picture of Alicia Keys reading it on a plane. And boy am I glad he did. Emily Polson     Born a Crime by Trevor Noah: This book came recommended by numerous Rioters, and as I already like Trevor Noah from the Daily Show, I dutifully waited out my time on the library holds list. It’s both a hilarious memoir and an introduction to South African culture during and after apartheid. I’m learning (and laughing) a lot. (library hardcover)

Why Is Attending A Four Year University - 753 Words

During the prime of adolescents, children are honed about the importance of attending college if they ever have hope of obtaining success. Pursuing a higher education can, in fact, be costly but yet extremely beneficial. One who attends a four-year university may have a different experience then one who attends a two-year community college: campus involvement, administration, post graduation readiness. In sequence, one who attends a four-year university may get the notion that they are receiving a more quality. By making differences in colleges and universities, society may discourage those who want to attend a community college. However, it is important that we point out the differences between four-year universities and two-year colleges if there is any hope of giving students the best of both worlds (Braxton, Doyle, Lyken-Segosebe, 2015). Students who are active in campus activities have a higher chance of graduating. Students feel a sense of responsibility to assist the organization by setting and accomplishing goals. Not only will the organization thrive, but the university will also begin to gain more students. Being a part of student lead organizations will teach students leadership, teamwork, and flexibility. For Centuries, Ink On Skin Has Been A Synonym For Social

For centuries, ink on skin has been a synonym for social markers, group identity, and perpetration of traditions. Tattoos in the past were a permanent hallmark--a stamp of authenticity and a mark of permanent fidelity to a cause, a group, or to an identity. They were a loud statement of culture and belonging. They served as amulets, symbols, and religious traditions. However, nowadays, tattoos seem just the product of a capricious and vain pop culture. They seem cheap and easy souvenirs from travel adventure, bachelorette parties, and army service. They seem a symbol of individualism and capitalism. With the advent of social media and computer industry, tattoo as shifted from being an expression of traditional culture to being an†¦show more content†¦According to Cotter Mirabole (2003), to address the above questions properly, we need to take into consideration â€Å"the interests of the artists, the intellectual property rights owner, and the human subject (p. 103). In other words, we need to address and resolve authorship and ownership issues. We need to define the author and the owner of the original idea, the author and the owner of the design on paper, and the author and the owner of the ink work on skin. Depending on the circumstances, the author of the idea, the author of the sketch, and the author of the ink design could be the body artist or the human canvas or both. In the same way, the owner of the idea, the owner, of the sketch on paper, and the owner of the ink on the skin could be the body artist, or the human canvas or both. Attribution of ownership an d authorship of a tattoo is a very complex matter because the work of art is permanent; the canvas is human flesh, and there is â€Å"a clear distinction between a tattoo and the drawings, sketches, or other works of art upon which a tattoo is base† (Minahan, 2015, p. 1727). Generational poverty is an unfortunate issue which affects individuals, families, and cultures all over the world. Generational poverty is considered a very complex problem due to the length of time and ways it affects certain families as an entirety. The severity of this issue makes it extremely difficult to find any resolutions in improving this epidemic. We will write a custom essay sample on Reflective Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now If a family is experiencing generational poverty, they have had to live in poverty for a minimum of two generations. According to Cleveland, â€Å"It is important to recognize this time factor to be able to separate it from â€Å"situational poverty,† characteristically understood as a lack of resources due to particular sets of events, i. e. a death, chronic illness, divorce, etc. ,† (n. d. ). Almost every family and individual decision is made for the present. Individuals are not taught to think ahead and plan for their future. This is a trending factor in the difficulty in overcoming generational poverty. Members whom belong to generational poverty have a sense of entitlement from society. Individuals have a constant defense mechanism to society as a whole. The most significant aspect to families suffering from generational poverty is that the â€Å"momma† is the central figure and focus to the family. The mom is what feels safe to the family. She is the ultimate caregiver to individuals in her family and to her house. Even after her children have grown into adults, both the mother and children have a difficult time with the child becoming independent. Love is the center of â€Å"momma’s† home. The male figure in generational poverty is responsible for the manual labor and will fight for their family. Although they display a rough outer layer, they still show a great love for the members in their family. Even though there is a constant, huge amount of love, most communication within the family maintains in a nonverbal form. Overcoming generational poverty can be a challenging task. There are several key factors when considering on improving the poverty status. Some of these factors include: Education is key in getting out and staying out of generational poverty, being in poverty is rarely about a lack of intelligence or ability, individuals stay in poverty because they do not see â€Å"choice†, or if they do, they do not know how to access proper resources or people to get them to the point of actually â€Å"choosing† to organize themselves, complete assignments, behave respectfully, plan for the future, and communicate in conventional register (Cleveland, n.d. ). Once a child is born into generational poverty, schools are one of the few places where they are exposed to certain choices and rules of how a higher class lives. This also allows the child access to resources and people who want to assist in the child rising from poverty. There are specific characteristics displayed in those suffering from generational poverty, which contribute to the difficulty in overcoming it. One of these characteristics is the â€Å"working memory†. â€Å"Neuroscientists discovered that the working memories of children raised in poverty are much smaller compared to those in middle-class,† (Pinoy, 2009). An individual’s brain capacity is a crucial part of their development. If a child is raised in a stressful household, the stress causes a limited supply of new nerve cells in the brain and memory. This can make it very difficult for the child to solve problems, read and properly communicate. The most effective way to begin overcoming generational poverty is for society to have a clear understanding of the complexity of this issue. Women face many unique challenges in the different stages of poverty life. Although, many issues that trap women and girls in generational poverty can be alleviated by a good education. Job prospects multiply with every level of school completed; better jobs bring more income and, consequently, more options for housing, transportation, child-care and healthcare. But, it is challenging for a woman to secure a good education due to the several setbacks. A woman in poverty does to have the ability or access to pay for necessary education for either her or her child(ren). A woman in poverty is consumed with the hours she spends working to care for the home and kids and feels this is the number one priority. It is also normal for the women to not have access to reliable transportation. According to Knight, â€Å"For a girl who seems to be making her way up the ladder out of generational poverty, pregnancy can be an enormous setback,† (2012). Mental health is even more likely to be neglected. The research shows that starting early by teaching girls life skills, such as financial  planning and goal setting, can reduce stress and increase self-esteem. Girls who live with hope and support are more likely to feel that they have inherent value and don’t have to depend on others – including boys – for validation. In order to improve the challenges that women in poverty face, it is imperative for society to offer programs and convenience to teach these women on how to improve their life quality. Mentors should be available to provide services on sharing examples and how positive goals can be accomplished by taking the necessary steps. I have learned a great deal of information after viewing the informational videos and reading all the material on generational poverty. It has definitely changed my perspective on how I approach this special population. As most of the general population, stereotyping is a part of my daily life. I never truly understood the depth of the generational poverty issues that are present. I have learned that not only is there a lack of school environment education, but individuals suffering from generational poverty need educated on how to â€Å"properly† live life each day in order to obtain goals. I have also learned these families can love more than your average family. They have a very strong bond between the members within their family. While love is important and necessary, they also have a misperception of life goals. The implications of this destructive cycle are the reasons generational poverty continues to be an issue. Reflective Paper – Effective Human Resources Management Theresa Tapley BUS 303 Dr. Kevin Righter March 13, 2010 Reflective Paper – Effective Human Resources Management Effective Human Resources Management (HRM) plays a major role in ensuring that an organization will survive and prosper. The HRM facilitates the most effective use of people or employees to achieve organizational and individual goals. We will write a custom essay sample on Reflective Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now The HRM consists of numerous activities which include, equal employment opportunity (EEO) compliance, job analysis, human resource planning, the recruitment, selection, motivation, and orientation of employees, performance evaluation and compensation, the training and development of employees, labor relations, and the safety, health, and wellness of the workforce. Effective human resources management plays a vital role in the success of an organization and is an active participant in charting the strategic course of competitiveness, productiveness, and efficiency. An effective HRM focuses on action rather than on record-keeping, written procedure, or rules. Although the use of rules, records, and policies are incorporated, â€Å"action† is the focus. The HRM emphasizes the solution of employment problems to help achieve organizational objectives and facilitate employees’ development and satisfaction. An effective HRM is, also, people-oriented. Whenever possible, the HRM treats each employee as an individual and offers services and program to meet the individual’s needs. An effective HRM program is concerned with helping an organization achieve its objectives in the future by providing for competent, well-motivated employees. Human resources are incorporated into an organization’s long-term strategic plans to assist with ensuring that future growth needs will be adequately staffed with qualified, trained employees (Ivancewich, 2010, pg 5). EEO and Affirmative Action One external factor that has a powerful influence on my company’s HRM unction is the equal employment opportunity and human rights legislation, which has a profound effect on our policies and procedures concerning recruiting, selection, evaluation, and promotion. The U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is an independent federal agency that enforces laws against workplace discrimination. The EEOC investigates discrimination complaints based on an individual’s race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability and retaliation for reporting and /or opposing a discriminatory practice. This commission is empowered to file discrimination suits against employers on behalf of alleged victims and to adjudicate claims of discrimination brought against federal agencies. No other regulatory area has as thoroughly affected HRM as the EEO programs have. It has implications for almost every activity in HRM and sets standards for hiring, recruiting, training, terminating, compensating, evaluating, planning, disciplining, and collective bargaining. Employers, to prevent employment discrimination in the workplace or to take remedial action to offset employment discrimination implement EEO programs, (Ivancevich, 2010, pg 65). According to the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) website, the EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. The laws also apply to all type of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, demotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits. During the employment selection process, each candidate should be evaluated on their qualification of the job requirements, based on their experience, education, and skill set. Many corporations use testing as an important tool. Rae T. Vann, general counsel of the Equal Employment Advisory Council, a national association of large federal contractors, observed, â€Å"When done properly, testing can be a very important tool in the employment selection process, and we commend the Commission on its efforts to improve the quality and fairness of tests and other job screening methods† (Title VII: Affirmative Action, 2006). I encourage my Clinical Managers to become familiar with the provisions of the EEO standards and guidelines. It is essential that they make every effort to seek counsel from our HR dept when initiating the interview and hiring process, dealing with poor performance, disabilities, demotions, appearance of harassment, and training and re-training. Throughout my five years of administrative management, I have unfortunately had to learn HRM and EEOC laws the hard way, through trial and error. With each mistake that I have made, such as not consulting the HR department before decreasing a dual role employee’s hours so that she could focus on one role due to extremely poor performance, I have learned the proper steps to come to the same conclusion. The decrease in hours caused her to lose her benefits and subsequently she filed an EEOC claim of discrimination and retaliation. Fortunately, due to proper documentation of the corrective actions, developmental action plan and the documented counseling, our HRM has adequate information to refute the claim. Now, I consult my HRM representative with any concerns, questions, or updates related to employee situations. Planning, Recruitment, and Selection Human resources planning are the processes by which management ensures that it has the right personnel, who are capable of completing those tasks that help the organization, reach its objectives. It involves forecasting of human resources needs and the projected matching of individuals with expected vacancies (International Labour Organization, 2010). An effective HR plan, also, provides mechanisms to eliminate any gaps that may exist between supply and demand. HR planning determines the numbers and types of employees to be recruited into the organization or phased out of it (Ivancevich, 2010). The Human Resource Planning Process incorporates strategic planning which will have a direct effect on the organization’s profitability. The strategic plan must adapt to environmental circumstances. It must forecast how many and what employees are required for the organizations staffing requirements. Next, it must determine how many and what kind of employees are currently employed with the skills and training necessary for the future needs. Finally, after the HR system has analyzed the supply of and the demand or future workers, these two forecasts are compared to determine what action should be taken. Effective workforce planning is a critical element of effective strategic and operational planning. Workforce planning provides managers with a strategic basis for making human resource decisions. It allows managers to anticipate change ather than being surprised by events, as well as providing strategic methods for addressing present and anticipated workforce issues. You read "Reflective Paper" in category "Papers" The US Department of Health and Human Services states, â€Å"Organizational success depends on having the right employees with the right competencies at the right time. Workforce planning provides managers the means of identifying the competencies needed in the workfo rce not only in the present but in the future and then selecting and developing that workforce† (US Dept. Health and Human Services, 2010). The HR department for my company has implemented a staffing model tool that projects future, potential, or expected growth versus the actual census, the current staffing and skill set of that staff, and calculates the hiring needs of specific positions within the direct and indirect patient care. Once the future needs are determined, then the hiring process begins. Human Resources Development Training and development are processes that attempt to provide an employee with information, skills, and an understanding of the organization and its goals. Training and development are designed to help a person continue to make positive contributions in the form of good performance and advancement within the organization. A solid orientation program is the first step in developing an employee. It reduces anxiety and fears, reduces start-up costs of a new employee, reduces turnover, saves time for supervisors and co-workers, and develops realistic expectations, positive attitudes toward the employer and job satisfaction. Once will established in a specific position, then the manager and employee must set goals for development and advancement. Management and professional development is designed to reduce obsolescence and to increase employees’ satisfaction and productivity. An important part of development is the evaluation process. Performance management is the process by which executives, managers, and supervisors work to align employee performance with the firm’s goals. An effective performance management process determines and evaluates performance, provides feedback to the employees about their performance, and measures and monitors skill-set (Ivancevich, 2010, pg 251). The company that I work for has an excellent formal performance evaluation process that is very effective in the development the employee and the motivation to succeed. Appraising and managing performance at my workplace starts form the day of hire. Each newly hired direct or indirect patient care must attend a through and intensive training program. After 90 days, from date of hire, the new staff member is evaluated for suitability for the position. The manager will present a written 90-day evaluation to the staff member. This evaluation will result in a successful completion of the introductory period, determine a need for an extension of 30 days to improve and meet expectations, or termination due to being unsuitable for the position (this usually occurs when the staff member continually fails to follow policies and procedures and/or causing patient endangerment). Every manager must complete an annual evaluation for staff members under their direct supervision. The score on the evaluation determine the merit increase and caps set forth by the company. When a staff member is failing to follow policy and procedure, putting patient’s safety in jeopardy, tardiness or excessive absenteeism, insubordination, breaking confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, and etc. the manager will conduct corrective action in the form of documented counseling, written corrective action, final corrective action, 3 day suspension, and/or termination. To make this process more effective and ensure compliance with EEOC and federal and state regulations, both next level supervisor and the HR dept representative must approve all final corrective actions, 3-day suspensions, and terminations. Compensation and Benefits There are several reasons that an employer or corporation will offer benefits and services to their employees. One reason is to keep the organization competitive in recruit and retaining employees. Another reason is to keep a union out or because the union has won this during negotiations. Finally, is the fact that providing benefits and service contributed to increased employee performance and job satisfaction (Ivancevich, 2010, pg358). Federal and state governments mandate three benefits programs offered by private and not-for-profit employers. The three mandated programs are unemployment insurance, social security, and workers’ compensation. In addition to the benefits required by law, many employers provide other kinds of benefits voluntarily, such as, compensation for time not worked, insurance protection, retirement plans, FMLA or medical FMLA, life insurance, short and long-term disability, and various retirement programs and stock ownership plans. Some organizations offer tuition reimbursement and flexible benefits plans. Whenever I am interviewing a candidate for a position, I always spend a portion of the interview discussing and explaining our benefit package. Sometimes our hourly rate is not quite as high as our competitor, but our benefits and employee services usually out ways the difference in compensation. Safety and Health The Human Resource Management team of the dialysis company of which I am employed, works very closely with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to ensure that the most acceptable and innovative concepts in employee safety and health are used. The NIOSH is the primary federal agency that conducts research on the safety and health of the workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) of 1970, to provide research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health established it in 1971 (Bradley, 2002). The NIOSH develops and promotes the use of national and state-based surveillance systems to identify, quantify, and track injuries and illnesses. Epidemiological analysis of these databases helps identify unsafe and unhealthy workplace conditions. NIOSH also supports laboratory and field research to further identify, assess, and control occupational hazards and exposures and the diseases and injuries they cause. In addition to identifying risks, the NIOSH develops and evaluates prevention measures such as control technology, personal protective equipment, and work practices. Through research internally within our company and the NIOSH, many improvements and standards have been put into place for water treatment safety and personal protective equipment. We have strong policies and procedures that protect both the employee and the patient from exposure to health or safety hazards. There are several reasons for establishing good occupational safety and health standards. First, on a moral note, an employee should not have to risk injury or death at work, nor should others associated with the work environment. The second is economical in nature. Many governments realize that poor occupational safety and health performance results in cost to the State, through social security payments to the incapacitated, costs for medical treatment, and the loss of the employability of the worker. The employing organizations also sustain costs in the event of an incident at work, such as legal fees, fines, compensatory damages, investigation time, and lost production, lost goodwill from the workforce, customers, and community. Lastly, from a legal standpoint, the occupational safety and health requirements may be reinforced in civil law and/or criminal law. It is a known fact, that without the extra â€Å"encouragement† of potential regulatory action or litigation, many organizations would not act upon their implied moral obligations. During a Frontline interview with assistant secretary of labor for occupational health and safety, John Henshaw, the question was asked, â€Å"How successful do you think OSHA has been at protecting workers in the United States? † Mr. Henshaw replied, â€Å"In the last 30 years, OSHA has made some tremendous strides in reducing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. In the last six to eight years, injuries have gone steadily down and fatalities have gone down to the point where they are the lowest ever (Frontline, 2002). The dialysis industry is carefully scrutinized to uphold acceptable OSHA safety and health standards. We, also, have internal auditors that simulate inspections to ensure compliance and safe practices. Employee and Labor Relations Labor relations can refer broadly to any dealings between management and workers about employment conditions. Most commonly, however, labor relations refer to dealings between management and a workforce that is already unionized, or has the potential to become unionized. Labor relations are thus crucial to industries like autos and airlines with heavily unionized workforces. In the United States, labor relations were profoundly affected by the National Labor Relations Act passed during the 1930’s, which gave workers the right to form unions and bargain collectively. Labor relations have been drastically affected by the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act, which prohibited the â€Å"closed shop†, as well as, the introduction of right-to-work laws in more than 20 states (Ivancevich, 2010, pgs 477). By the early 21st century, labor relations were less affected by labor unions, to which only 8 percent of private sector workers belonged in 2004, about half of the rate in 1983. The decline reflects the increase in labor relations consultants, who have helped managements avoid unionization (Anonymous, 2010). The presence of a union directly affects most aspects of Human Resources Management, including recruiting, selection, performance evaluation, promotion, compensation, and benefits, among others (Ivancevich, 2010, pg. 34). Unions were once thought of a being for blue-collar factory workers, but now even engineers, nurses, teachers, secretaries, salespersons, college professors, professional football players and even physicians belong to unions. Within my workplace, we have an ongoing informational and educational campaign against the unethical practices of recruitment and enticement for our employees. We offer seminars and counseling in regards to the unionization tactics. While facing declining membership, union officials have turned to highly questionable practice of organizing new members through a process called â€Å"card check†. With card checks, paid union organizers try to persuade workers to sign cards saying that they favor union representation. This persuasion comes in the form of deception, coercion, and harassing visits to worker’s homes. John Ivancevich describes this practice as the â€Å"authorization card† (Ivancevich, 2010, pg. 480). Under current laws, as soon as more than 50 percent of the workers sign a union authorization card, all employees within that organization will be required to participate in the union and pay union dues, even though not a single employee has actually been able to cast a personal, private vote. Often times, individual will sign the cards under intentional or unintentional misunderstandings or to get the organizer to stop harassing them, even though the employee may have no desire to join a union (Anonymous, 2010). Conclusion Human Resources Management is the heart of every organization. It serves as an advocate for each employee, while also protecting the organization from legal repercussions. Whether it is ensuring equal employment opportunity (EEO) compliance, providing job analysis, planning for the future staffing needs and subsequent recruitment and selection of qualified candidates, each of these areas are vital to a well-organized corporation. The HRM is paramount in the motivation, training, and development of employees. Ensuring a positive orientation experience, and concise performance evaluation and compensation will aid in retention and job satisfaction. Finally, the HRM has an extremely important role in labor relations and ensuring the safety, health, and wellness of the workforce. References Anonymous. (2010). When voting isn’t Private. But his true characteristics are revealed when he converses with Connie and invites her to for a ride. The first thing that points towards the fact that he is devil in disguise is his claim that he has collected all information about Connie. I took a special interest in you, such a pretty girl, and found out all about youlike I know your parents and sister are gone somewheres and I know where and how long they're going to be gone, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl friend's name is Betty. Right? (Oates). Arnold Friend knew that Connie was alone and he wanted to take advantage of this situation. He also knew that Connies parent s will not return soon. He selects such a time to visit Connie when she is most vulnerable. He wanted to create circumstances, owing to which Connie is forced to come along with him. He was a devil, who selected his victim and ensured that his victim had no other alternative than to act according to his desire. To convince Connie to come with him for a ride, he lies about his age. That's a crazy thing to ask. Can'tcha see I'm your own age?" "Like hell you are." "Or maybe a couple years older. I'm eighteen. He promises her that if she comes out of the house and goes on a ride with him then he will spare her parents and sister, I'm the boy for you, and like I said, you come out here nice like a lady and give me your hand, and nobody else gets hurt, I mean, your nice old bald-headed daddy and your mummy and your sister in her high heels. Because listen: why bring them in this? (Oates). He terrorizes Connie to such an extent that she succumbs to his demand and comes out of her house. Arnold Friend tries to present himself as the lover of Connie but in reality he was a devil who wanted to fulfill his evil desires. Being a devil, Arnold Friend coerces Connie to accept his demand by creating fear in her mind. Colors in Great Gatsby essays

Colors in Great Gatsby essays THE COLORS IN THE GREAT GATSBY In F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby, the author uses colors to symbolize various scenes and the moods of different characters. Each of the colors has a specific meaning, and the author does an excellent job in assigning these colors to specific characters and situations. The author uses the color green most often, and in most cases it symbolizes feelings related to loneliness and jealousy. In addition to the color green, the author also uses the color white to signify wealth, and the color yellow to relate to aging and decaying. The color gold relates to money and power, and the color black represents negativity. Almost all the chapters include the color green, and green does not always symbolize the same thing. It relates to many different relations, such as loneliness, envy, anger, and death. In the beginning of the book, we first notice green as the color of the light in front of Daisys house. Since her house is across the bay from Gatsbys house, he can see and feel her presence. The green light in Gatsbys house also symbolizes loneliness because it is turned on while the Saturday parties are held, but when Daisy starts visiting him, the green light disappears because Gatsby is no longer lonely. Green also stands for envy. Gatsby is a dominant figure in this book, and the fact that he obtains his wealth at such a young age makes many jealous of him. As Nick describes his car, It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length (65). We notice that he envies him for not having that sort of luxurious car, and the green leather interior symbolizes t his envy. Tom is also jealous of Gatsby. He shows his jealousy by driving Gatsbys car because it is better than his own. Another sign of Toms jealousy is the green mint julep that they drink in the Plaza ...

5 Points to Take into Account While Looking for Writers to Help with Your Assignment

5 Points to Take into Account While Looking for Writers to Help with Your Assignment 5 Points to Take into Account While Looking for Writers to Help with Your Assignment When you are looking to hire a writer, you have to make sure that he/she is the best candidate for the task to handle. Unfortunately, many people do not know which qualities to pay attention to, when they are searching for writers. Luckily, this article will help you understand which factors you should consider before hiring the writer. There are five key points that determine if the person you are interviewing will provide you with the best writing. 1. Previous Feedback When you are looking for writers, pay attention to the previous customers’ feedback. Almost all professional writers have reviews that their clients have left. Look over them to make sure that the person you are going to hire is reliable and really good at writing. If the writer does not have any reviews, or is not willing to show you the clients’ feedback, this is the red flag that you have to omit such a person and find someone else to work with. 2. Writing Samples Good, readable writing is the most important skill of a truly professional writer. As such, you need to make sure that the person you are going to hire is well qualified for the job. The best way to do this is to ask him/her for the samples. You can look through these papers and determine whether the writers style fits your needs. 3. Communication Skills Can you easily contact the person you would like to hire? Good communication skills are very important. This ensures you that the writer is able to understand and meet your needs. Additionally, being able to contact the writer makes it easier to discuss any revisions or changes that might be required. 4. Ability to Meet Deadlines Your project needs to be completed within a finite amount of time before the due day. Otherwise, you will not have enough time to check the paper, and as a result will be punished for delaying or for submitting the poor piece. Because of this, you have to work with someone who will be able to meet the deadline. So, make sure that the writer knows exactly when the assignment has to be finished. 5. Does the Writer Works for an Agency? Are you looking for a freelance assignment writer, or someone who works for an agency? Some writers work for themselves, while others are employed by writing companies. While both options are great, writers, who work for the agencies, tend to be more reliable. They are part of the larger businesses, so they treat their crafts with professional seriousness. Good feedback, great writing samples, and being able to meet the deadline are the items to ensure you that you are on the right path. Consequently, such a writer will provide you with a worthy paper. So, when you want to find the most qualified writer possible, use these key points to make the right choice and to hire the best candidate for you piece.

Evaluate Merleau-Ponty's account in The World of Perception of the Essay

Evaluate Merleau-Ponty's account in The World of Perception of the relation of human beings both to each other and other animals - Essay Example Humans interact with other animals differently depending on the value of the other animals. The nature of the relationship both among humans and with other animals is structured with the view of sustaining the life of humanity. As social organisms, humans live in effectively constructed societies with a set of laws that govern the nature of the relationship among humans. The need for procreation and sustenance of life is a fundamental feature that influences both the nature of the relationship among humans. Among the basic relationship among humans is the family an institution that guarantees both companionship and the sustenance of life. However, for the development of effective societies humans require peaceful correlation among each other a feature that influences the development of governments. Social contract theorists explain that the need for peaceful coexistence in societies influence the formation of governments through democratic governments to govern for specific periods. Among the basic objective of the governments is to maintain law and order besides safeguarding the rights and privileges of the people. While the creation of governments is an effective way of ensuring orderliness of the societies thus guaranteeing freedom and safety of every individual in a society, it portrays the inability of humans to live peacefully without conflicts. Humans’ population increase results in increased pressure on the resources a feature that give rise to numerous conflicts. Such is a fundamental feature of human interactions that Maurice Merleau-Ponty discusses in his book. All the conflicts in the human society arise from either competition for resources or competition for mates. In order to provide amicable solutions to their conflicts, humans organize themselves in societies with effective leadership and systems that perfect in conflict

Free Shakespeares Hamlet Essays: Gertrude and Hamlet :: GCSE English Literature Coursework

Gertrude and Hamlet  Ã‚   Hamlet's behavior is often explained using Freud's theory of sexual behavior; however  the symptoms of bipolar disease explain Hamlet's behavior. Bipolar disease is defined as: "This disease causes symptoms like mood swings with periods of both depression and mania. They have consequent changes in thinking and behavior. Bipolar means the sharing of two poles, or high and low, having to do with mood."(2)   Ã‚  Ã‚   " Hamlet's behavior throughout the play was extremely physical, excessive talkativeness, destructiveness and sometimes grandiosity. These mood characteristics are the effects of bipolar disease." (1) Hamlet is extremely physical in his dealings with Ophelia and Gertrude. His excessive talkativeness is most evident in his soliloquies and his dialogue with his mother. His destructiveness is obvious in his conversation with the ghost; his grandiosity in his sarcasm towards Polonius. Incredibly, Bipolar disease describes Hamlet's behavior very accurately.    When Hamlet’s father was murdered by Claudius, difficulties arose between Hamlet and Gertrude to cope with one another. Hamlet got angry with his mother for remarrying Claudius, his father’s murderer, that he decides to be more rough towards her, simply to gain control over her.   Ã‚   When Hamlet grew up with his father and his mother, they grew up with a disorder known as Bipolar disease. "This is a disease where you think delusional, since it was inherited, passed on from parent to child, Gertrude’s marriage and Hamlet’s reaction to it, could have been the effects of this symptom. Hamlet’s father was "an enabler" who had made it possible for them to function, but now that his father is dead, they found it tough to cope with each other, as the family they once had."(1)   Ã‚  Ã‚   Hamlet became angry for a reason, which was to try to get attention from his mother. This attention came in a sexual form, as shown when he kissed her and when he groped her. With this new bond, he tried to gain further control over his mother, to try and abolish the marriage between her and Claudius. Two quotes to support this are: Queen: "Nay then, I’ll set those to you that can speak." (III;iv) Hamlet: "Come, come, and sit you down; you shall not budge." (III;iv)   Ã‚  Ã‚   This occurs when he tells Gertrude she can’t move, therefore he shows to the viewers he has power over what she says and does. If he cared, he would let her function as she wanted to, and he would support her decision.

Chapter 19 The Servant of Lord Voldemort

Hermione screamed. Black leapt to his feet. Harry felt as though he'd received a huge electric shock. â€Å"I found this at the base of the Whomping Willow,† said Snape, throwing the cloak aside, careful to keep this wand pointing directly at Lupin's chest. â€Å"Very useful, Potter, I thank you†¦.† Snape was slightly breathless, but his face was full of suppressed triumph. â€Å"You're wondering, perhaps, how I knew you were here?† he said, his eyes glittering. â€Å"I've just been to your office, Lupin. You forgot to take your potion tonight, so I took a gobletful along. And very lucky I did†¦lucky for me, I mean. Lying on your desk was a certain map. One glance at it told me all I needed to know. I saw you running along this passageway and out of sight.† â€Å"Severus –† Lupin began, but Snape overrode him. â€Å"I've told the headmaster again and again that you're helping your old friend Black into the castle, Lupin, and here's the proof. Not even I dreamed you would have the nerve to use this old place as your hideout –â€Å" â€Å"Severus, you're making a mistake,† said Lupin urgently. â€Å"You haven't heard everything — I can explain — Sirius is not here to kill Harry –â€Å" â€Å"Two more for Azkaban tonight,† said Snape, his eyes now gleaming fanatically. â€Å"I shall be interested to see how Dumbledore takes this†¦He was quite convinced you were harmless, you know, Lupin†¦a tame werewolf –â€Å" â€Å"You fool,† said Lupin softly. â€Å"Is a schoolboy grudge worth putting an innocent man back inside Azkaban?† BANG! Thin, snakelike cords burst from the end of Snape's wand and twisted themselves around Lupin's mouth, wrists, and ankles; he overbalanced and fell to the floor, unable to move. With a roar of rage, Black started toward Snape, but Snape pointed his wand straight between Black's eyes. â€Å"Give me a reason,† he whispered. â€Å"Give me a reason to do it, and I swear I will.† Black stopped dead. It would have been impossible to say which face showed more hatred. Harry stood there, paralyzed, not knowing what to do or whom to believe. He glanced around at Ron and Hermione. Ron looked just as confused as he did, still fighting to keep hold on the struggling Scabbers. Hermione, however, took an uncertain step toward Snape and said, in a very breathless voice, â€Å"Professor Snape — it wouldn't hurt to hear what they've got to say, w-would it?† â€Å"Miss Granger, you are already facing suspension from this school,† Snape spat. â€Å"You, Potter, and Weasley are out-of-bounds, in the company of a convicted murderer and a werewolf. For once in your life, hold your tongue.† â€Å"But if — if there was a mistake –â€Å" â€Å"KEEP QUIET, YOU STUPID GIRL!† Snape shouted, looking suddenly quite deranged. â€Å"DON'T TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!† A few sparks shot out of the end of his wand, which was still pointed at Black's face. Hermione fell silent. â€Å"Vengeance is very sweet,† Snape breathed at Black. â€Å"How I hoped I would be the one to catch you†¦.† â€Å"The joke's on you again, Severus,† Black snarled. â€Å"As long as this boy brings his rat up to the castle† — he jerked his head at Ron — â€Å"I'll come quietly†¦.† â€Å"Up to the castle?† said Snape silkily. â€Å"I don't think we need to go that far. All I have to do is call the Dementors once we get out of the Willow. They'll be very pleased to see you, Black†¦pleased enough to give you a little kiss, I daresay†¦I –â€Å" What little color there was in Black's face left it. â€Å"You -you've got to hear me out,† he croaked. â€Å"The rat — look at the rat –â€Å" But there was a mad glint in Snape's eyes that Harry had never seen before. He seemed beyond reason. â€Å"Come on, all of you,† he said. He clicked his fingers, and the ends of the cords that bound Lupin flew to his hands. â€Å"I'll drag the werewolf. Perhaps the Dementors will have a kiss for him too –â€Å" Before he knew what he was doing, Harry had crossed the room in three strides and blocked the door. â€Å"Get out of the way, Potter, you're in enough trouble already,† snarled Snape. â€Å"If I hadn't been here to save your skin –â€Å" â€Å"Professor Lupin could have killed me about a hundred times this year,† Harry said. â€Å"I've been alone with him loads of times, having defense lessons against the Dementors. If he was helping Black, why didn't he just finish me off then?† â€Å"Don't ask me to fathom the way a werewolf's mind works,† hissed Snape. â€Å"Get out of the way, Potter.† â€Å"YOU'RE PATHETIC!† Harry yelled. â€Å"JUST BECAUSE THEY MADE A FOOL OF YOU AT SCHOOL YOU WON'T EVEN LISTEN –â€Å" â€Å"SILENCE! I WILL NOT BE SPOKEN TO LIKE THAT!† Snape shrieked, looking madder than ever. â€Å"Like father, like son, Potter! I have just saved your neck; you should be thanking me on bended knee! You would have been well served if he'd killed you! You'd have died like your father, too arrogant to believe you might be mistaken in Black — now get out of the way, or I will make you. GET OUT OF THE WAY, POTTER!† Harry made up his mind in a split second. Before Snape could take even one step toward him, he had raised his wand. â€Å"Expelliarmus!† he yelled — except that his wasn't the only voice that shouted. There was a blast that made the door rattle on its hinges; Snape was lifted off his feet and slammed into the wall, then slid down it to the floor, a trickle of blood oozing from under his hair. He had been knocked out. Harry looked around. Both Ron and Hermione had tried to disarm Snape at exactly the same moment. Snape's wand soared in a high arc and landed on the bed next to Crookshanks. â€Å"You shouldn't have done that,† said Black, looking at Harry. â€Å"You should have left him to me†¦.† Harry avoided Black's eyes. He wasn't sure, even now, that he'd done the right thing. â€Å"We attacked a teacher†¦We attacked a teacher†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Hermione whimpered, staring at the lifeless Snape with frightened eyes. â€Å"Oh, we're going to be in so much trouble –â€Å" Lupin was struggling against his bonds. Black bent down quickly and untied him. Lupin straightened up, rubbing his arms where the ropes had cut into them. â€Å"Thank you, Harry,† he said. â€Å"I'm still not saying I believe you,† he told Lupin. â€Å"Then it's time we offered you some proof,† said Lupin. â€Å"You, boy — give me Peter, please. Now.† Ron clutched Scabbers closer to his chest. â€Å"Come off it,† he said weakly. â€Å"Are you trying to say he broke out of Azkaban just to get his hands on Scabbers? I mean†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He looked up at Harry and Hermione for support, â€Å"Okay, say Pettigrew could turn into a rat — there are millions of rats — how's he supposed to know which one he is after if he was locked up in Azkaban?† â€Å"You know, Sirius, that's a fair question,† said Lupin, turning to Black and frowning slightly. â€Å"How did you find out where he was?† Black put one of his claw-like hands inside his robes and took out a crumpled piece of paper, which he smoothed flat and held out to show the others. It was the photograph of Ron and his family that had appeared in the Daily Prophet the previous summer, and there, on Ron's shoulder, was Scabbers. â€Å"How did you get this?† Lupin asked Black, thunderstruck. â€Å"Fudge,† said Black. â€Å"When he came to inspect Azkaban last year, he gave me his paper. And there was Peter, on the front page on this boy's shoulder†¦I knew him at once†¦how many times had I seen him transform? And the caption said the boy would be going back to Hogwarts†¦to where Harry was†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"My God,† said Lupin softly, staring from Scabbers to the picture in the paper and back again. â€Å"His front paw†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"What about it?† said Ron defiantly. â€Å"He's got a toe missing,† said Black. â€Å"Of course,† Lupin breathed. â€Å"So simple†¦so brilliant†¦he cut it off himself?† â€Å"Just before he transformed,† said Black. â€Å"When I cornered him, he yelled for the whole street to hear that I'd betrayed Lily and James. Then, before I could curse him, he blew apart the street with the wand behind his back, killed everyone within twenty feet of himself — and sped down into the sewer with the other rats†¦.† â€Å"Didn't you ever hear, Ron?† said Lupin. â€Å"The biggest bit of Peter they found was his finger.† â€Å"Look, Scabbers probably had a fight with another rat or something! He's been in my family for ages, right –â€Å" â€Å"Twelve years, in fact,† said Lupin. â€Å"Didn't you ever wonder why he was living so long?† â€Å"We — we've been taking good care of him!† said Ron. â€Å"Not looking too good at the moment, though, is he?† said Lupin. â€Å"I'd guess he's been losing weight ever since he heard Sirius was on the loose again†¦.† â€Å"He's been scared of that mad cat!† said Ron, nodding toward Crookshanks, who was still purring on the bed. But that wasn't right, Harry thought suddenly†¦Scabbers had been looking ill before he met Crookshanks†¦ ever since Ron's return from Egypt†¦since the time when Black had escaped†¦. â€Å"This cat isn't mad,† said Black hoarsely. He reached out a bony hand and stroked Crookshanks's fluffy head. â€Å"He's the most intelligent of his kind I've ever met. He recognized Peter for what he was right away. And when he met me, he knew I was no dog. It was a while before he trusted me†¦Finally, I managed to communicate to him what I was after, and he's been helping me†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"What do you mean?† breathed Hermione. â€Å"He tried to bring Peter to me, but couldn't†¦so he stole the passwords into Gryffindor Tower for me†¦As I understand it, he took them from a boy's bedside table†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Harry's brain seemed to be sagging under the weight of what he was hearing. It was absurd†¦and yet†¦ â€Å"But Peter got wind of what was going on and ran for it.† croaked Black. â€Å"This cat — Crookshanks, did you call him? — told me Peter had left blood on the sheets†¦I supposed he bit himself†¦Well, faking his own death had worked once.† These words jolted Harry to his senses. â€Å"And why did he fake his death?† he said furiously. â€Å"Because he knew you were about to kill him like you killed my parents!† â€Å"No,† said Lupin, â€Å"Harry–â€Å" â€Å"And now you've come to finish him off!† â€Å"Yes, I have,† said Black, with an evil look at Scabbers. â€Å"Then I should've let Snape take you!† Harry shouted. â€Å"Harry,† said Lupin hurriedly, â€Å"don't you see? All this time we've thought Sirius betrayed your parents, and Peter tracked him down — but it was the other way around, don't you see? Peter betrayed your mother and father — Sirius tracked Peter down –â€Å" â€Å"THAT'S NOT TRUE!† Harry yelled. â€Å"HE WAS THEIR SECRET-KEEPER! HE SAID SO BEFORE YOU TURNED UP. HE SAID HE KILLED THEM!† He was pointing at Black, who shook his head slowly; the sunken eyes were suddenly over bright. â€Å"Harry†¦I as good as killed them,† he croaked. â€Å"I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment, persuaded them to use him as Secret-Keeper instead of me†¦I'm to blame, I know it†¦The night they died, I'd arranged to check on Peter, make sure he was still safe, but when I arrived at his hiding place, he'd gone. Yet there was no sign of a struggle. It didn't feel right. I was scared. I set out for your parents' house straight away. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies†¦I realized what Peter must've done†¦what I'd done†¦.† His voice broke. He turned away. â€Å"Enough of this,† said Lupin, and there was a steely note in his voice Harry had never heard before. â€Å"There's one certain way to prove what really happened. Ron, give me that rat.† â€Å"What are you going to do with him if I give him to you?† Ron asked Lupin tensely. â€Å"Force him to show himself,† said Lupin. â€Å"If he really is a rat, it won't hurt him.† Ron hesitated. Then at long last, he held out Scabbers and Lupin took him. Scabbers began to squeak without stopping, twisting and turning, his tiny black eyes bulging in his head. â€Å"Ready, Sirius?† said Lupin. Black had already retrieved Snape's wand from the bed. He approached Lupin and the struggling rat, and his wet eyes suddenly seemed to be burning in his face. â€Å"Together?† he said quietly. â€Å"I think so†, said Lupin, holding Scabbers tightly in one hand and his wand in the other. â€Å"On the count of three. One — two — THREE!† A flash of blue-white light erupted from both wands; for a moment, Scabbers was frozen in midair, his small gray form twisting madly — Ron yelled — the rat fell and hit the floor. There was another blinding flash of light and then — It was like watching a speeded-up film of a growing tree. A head was shooting upward from the ground; limbs were sprouting; a moment later, a man was standing where Scabbers had been, cringing and wringing his hands. Crookshanks was spitting and snarling on the bed; the hair on his back was standing up. He was a very short man, hardly taller than Harry and Hermione. His thin, colorless hair was unkempt and there was a large bald patch on top. He had the shrunken appearance of a plump man who has lost a lot of weight in a short time. His skin looked grubby, almost like Scabbers's fur, and something of the rat lingered around his pointed nose and his very small, watery eyes. He looked around at them all, his breathing fast and shallow. Harry saw his eyes dart to the door and back again. â€Å"Well, hello, Peter,† said Lupin pleasantly, as though rats frequently erupted into old school friends around him. â€Å"Long time, no see.† â€Å"S–Sirius†¦R–Remus†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Even Pettigrew's voice was squeaky. Again, his eyes darted toward the door. â€Å"My friends†¦my old friends†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Black's wand arm rose, but Lupin seized him around the wrist, gave him a warning took, then turned again to Pettigrew, his voice light and casual. â€Å"We've been having a little chat, Peter, about what happened the night Lily and James died. You might have missed the finer points while you were squeaking around down there on the bed –â€Å" â€Å"Remus,† gasped Pettigrew, and Harry could see beads of sweat breaking out over his pasty face, â€Å"you don't believe him, do you†¦? He tried to kill me, Remus†¦.† â€Å"So we've heard,† said Lupin, more coldly. â€Å"I'd like to clear up one or two little matters with you, Peter, if you'll be so –â€Å" â€Å"He's come to try and kill me again!† Pettigrew squeaked suddenly, pointing at Black, and Harry saw that he used his middle finger, because his index was missing. â€Å"He killed Lily and James and now he's going to kill me too†¦You've got to help me, Remus†¦.† Black's face looked more skull-like than ever as he stared at Pettigrew with his fathomless eyes. â€Å"No one's going to try and kill you until we've sorted a few things out,† said Lupin. â€Å"Sorted things out?† squealed Pettigrew, looking wildly about him once more, eyes taking in the boarded windows and, again, the only door. â€Å"I knew he'd come after me! I knew he'd be back for me! I've been waiting for this for twelve years!† â€Å"You knew Sirius was going to break out of Azkaban?† said Lupin, his brow furrowed. â€Å"When nobody has ever done it before?† â€Å"He's got dark powers the rest of us can only dream of!† Pettigrew shouted shrilly. â€Å"How else did he get out of there? I suppose He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named taught him a few tricks!† Black started to laugh, a horrible, mirthless laugh that filled the whole room. â€Å"Voldemort, teach me tricks?† he said. Pettigrew flinched as though Black had brandished a whip at him. â€Å"What, scared to hear your old master's name?† said Black. â€Å"I don't blame you, Peter. His lot aren't very happy with you, are they?† â€Å"Don't know what you mean, Sirius –† muttered Pettigrew, his breathing faster than ever. His whole face was shining with sweat now. â€Å"You haven't been hiding from me for twelve years,† said Black. â€Å"You've been hiding from Voldemort's old supporters. I heard things in Azkaban, Peter†¦They all think you're dead, or you'd have to answer to them†¦I've heard them screaming all sorts of things in their sleep. Sounds like they think the double-crosser double-crossed them. Voldemort went to the Potters' on your information†¦and Voldemort met his downfall there. And not all Voldemort's supporters ended up in Azkaban, did they? There are still plenty out here, biding their time, pretending they've seen the error of their ways. If they ever got wind that you were still alive, Peter –â€Å" â€Å"Don't know†¦what you're talking about†¦Ã¢â‚¬ said Pettigrew again, more shrilly than ever. He wiped his face on his sleeve and looked up at Lupin. â€Å"You don't believe this — this madness, Remus –â€Å" â€Å"I must admit, Peter, I have difficulty in understanding why an innocent man would want to spend twelve years as a rat,† said Lupin evenly. â€Å"Innocent, but scared!† squealed Pettigrew. â€Å"If Voldemort's supporters were after me, it was because I put one of their best men in Azkaban — the spy, Sirius Black!† Black's face contorted. â€Å"How dare you,† he growled, sounding suddenly like the bearsized dog he had been. â€Å"I, a spy for Voldemort? When did I ever sneak around people who were stronger and more powerful than myself? But you, Peter — I'll never understand why I didn't see you were the spy from the start. You always liked big friends who'd look after you, didn't you? It used to be us†¦me and Remus†¦and James†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Pettigrew wiped his face again; he was almost panting for breath. â€Å"Me, a spy†¦must be out of your mind†¦never†¦don't know how you can say such a –â€Å" â€Å"Lily and James only made you Secret-Keeper because I suggested it,† Black hissed, so venomously that Pettigrew took a step backward. â€Å"I thought it was the perfect plan†¦a bluff†¦Voldemort would be sure to come after me, would never dream they'd use a weak, talentless thing like you†¦It must have been the finest moment of your miserable life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.† Pettigrew was muttering distractedly; Harry caught words like â€Å"far-fetched† and â€Å"lunacy,† but he couldn't help paying more attention to the ashen color of Pettigrew's face and the way his eyes continued to dart toward the windows and door. â€Å"Professor Lupin?† said Hermione timidly. â€Å"Can — can I say something?† â€Å"Certainly, Hermione,† said Lupin courteously. â€Å"Well — Scabbers — I mean, this — this man — he's been sleeping in Harry's dormitory for three years. If he's working for You-Know-Who, how come he never tried to hurt Harry before now?† â€Å"There!† said Pettigrew shrilly, pointing at Ron with his maimed hand. â€Å"Thank you! You see, Remus? I have never hurt a hair of Harry's head! Why should I?† â€Å"I'll tell you why,† said Black. â€Å"Because you never did anything for anyone unless you could see what was in it for you. Voldemort's been in hiding for fifteen years, they say he's half dead. You weren't about to commit murder right under Albus Dumbledore's nose, for a wreck of a wizard who'd lost all of his power, were you? You'd want to be quite sure he was the biggest bully in the playground before you went back to him, wouldn't you? Why else did you find a wizard family to take you in? Keeping an ear out for news, weren't you, Peter? Just in case your old protector regained strength, and it was safe to rejoin him†¦.† Pettigrew opened his mouth and closed it several times. He seemed to have lost the ability to talk. â€Å"Er — Mr. Black — Sirius?† said Hermione. Black jumped at being addressed like this and stared at Hermione as though he had never seen anything quite like her. â€Å"If you don't mind me asking, how — how did you get out of Azkaban, if you didn't use Dark Magic?† â€Å"Thank you!† gasped Pettigrew, nodding frantically at her. â€Å"Exactly! Precisely what I –â€Å" But Lupin silenced him with a look. Black was frowning slightly at Hermione, but not as though he were annoyed with her. He seemed to be pondering his answer. â€Å"I don't know how I did it,† he said slowly. â€Å"I think the only reason I never lost my mind is that I knew I was innocent. That wasn't a happy thought, so the Dementors couldn't suck it out of me†¦but it kept me sane and knowing who I am†¦helped me keep my powers†¦so when it all became†¦too much†¦I could transform in my cell†¦become a dog. Dementors can't see, you know†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He swallowed. â€Å"They feel their way toward people by feeding off their emotions†¦They could tell that my feelings were less — less human, less complex when I was a dog†¦but they thought, of course, that I was losing my mind like everyone else in there, so it didn't trouble them. But I was weak, very weak, and I had no hope of driving them away from me without a wand†¦.† â€Å"But then I saw Peter in that picture†¦I realized he was at Hogwarts with Harry†¦perfectly positioned to act, if one hint reached his ears that the Dark Side was gathering strength again†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Pettigrew was shaking his head, mouthing noiselessly, but staring all the while at Black as though hypnotized. â€Å"†¦ready to strike at the moment he could be sure of allies†¦and to deliver the last Potter to them. if he gave them Harry, who'd dare say he'd betrayed Lord Voldemort? He'd be welcomed back with honors†¦.† â€Å"So you see, I had to do something. I was the only one who knew Peter was still alive†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Harry remembered what Mr. Weasley had told Mrs. Wealsey. ‘The guards say he's been talking in his sleep†¦ always the same words†¦ ‘He's at Hogwarts.† â€Å"It was as if someone had lit a fire In my head, and the Dementors couldn't destroy it†¦It wasn't a happy feeling†¦it was an obsession†¦but it gave me strength, it cleared my mind. So, one night when they opened my door to bring food, I slipped past them as a dog†¦It's so much harder for them to sense animal emotions that they were confused†¦I was thin, very thin†¦thin enough to slip through the bars†¦I swam as a dog back to the mainland †¦I journeyed north and slipped into the Hogwarts grounds as a dog. I've been living in the forest ever since, except when I came to watch the Quidditch, of course. You fly as well as your father did, Harry†¦.† He looked at Harry, who did not look away. â€Å"Believe me,† croaked Black. â€Å"Believe me, Harry. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them.† And at long last, Harry believed him. Throat too tight to speak, he nodded. â€Å"No!† Pettigrew had fallen to his knees as though Harry's nod had been his own death sentence. He shuffled forward on his knees, groveling, his hands clasped in front of him as though praying. â€Å"Sirius — it's me†¦it's Peter†¦your friend†¦you wouldn't –â€Å" Black kicked out and Pettigrew recoiled. â€Å"There's enough filth on my robes without you touching them,† said Black. â€Å"Remus!† Pettigrew squeaked, turning to Lupin instead, writhing imploringly in front of him. â€Å"You don't believe this — wouldn't Sirius have told you they'd changed the plan?† â€Å"Not if he thought I was the spy, Peter,† said Lupin. â€Å"I assume that's why you didn't tell me, Sirius?† he said casually over Pettigrew's head. â€Å"Forgive me, Remus,† said Black. â€Å"Not at all, Padfoot, old friend,† said Lupin, who was now rolling up his sleeves. â€Å"And will you, in turn, forgive me for believing you were the spy?† â€Å"Of course,† said Black, and the ghost of a grin flitted across his gaunt face. He, too, began rolling up his sleeves. â€Å"Shall we kill him together?† â€Å"Yes, I think so,† said Lupin grimly. â€Å"You wouldn't†¦you won't†¦Ã¢â‚¬ gasped Pettigrew. And he scrambled around to Ron. â€Å"Ron†¦haven't I been a good friend†¦a good pet? You won't let them kill me, Ron, will you†¦you're on my side, aren't you?† But Ron was staring at Pettigrew with the utmost revulsion. â€Å"I let you sleep in my bed!† he said. â€Å"Kind boy†¦kind master†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Pettigrew crawled toward Ron â€Å"You won't let them do it†¦I was your rat†¦I was a good pet†¦.† â€Å"If you made a better rat than a human, it's not much to boast about, Peter,† said Black harshly. Ron, going still paler with pain, wrenched his broken leg out of Pettigrew's reach. Pettigrew turned on his knees, staggered forward, and seized the hem of Hermione's robes. â€Å"Sweet girl†¦clever girl†¦you — you won't let them†¦Help me†¦.† Hermione pulled her robes out of Pettigrew's clutching hands and backed away against the wall, looking horrified. Pettigrew knelt, trembling uncontrollably, and turned his head slowly toward Harry. â€Å"Harry†¦Harry†¦you look just like your father†¦just like him†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO HARRY?† roared Black. â€Å"HOW DARE YOU FACE HIM? HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT JAMES IN FRONT OF HIM?† â€Å"Harry,† whispered Pettigrew, shuffling toward him, hands outstretched. â€Å"Harry, James wouldn't have wanted me killed†¦James would have understood, Harry†¦he would have shown me mercy†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Both Black and Lupin strode forward, seized Pettigrew's shoulders, and threw him backward onto the floor. He sat there, twitching with terror, staring up at them. â€Å"You sold Lily and James to Voldemort,† said Black, who was shaking too. â€Å"Do you deny it?† Pettigrew burst into tears. It was horrible to watch, like an oversized, balding baby, cowering on the floor. â€Å"Sirius, Sirius, what could I have done? The Dark Lord†¦you have no idea†¦he has weapons you can't imagine †¦I was scared, Sirius, I was never brave like you and Remus and James. I never meant it to happen†¦He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named forced me –â€Å" â€Å"DON'T LIE!† bellowed Black. â€Å"YOU'D BEEN PASSING INFORMATION TO HIM FOR A YEAR BEFORE LILY AND JAMES DIED! YOU WERE HIS SPY!† â€Å"He — he was taking over everywhere!† gasped Pettigrew. â€Å"Wh-what was there to be gained by refusing him?† â€Å"What was there to be gained by fighting the most evil wizard who has ever existed?† said Black, with a terrible fury in his face. â€Å"Only innocent lives, Peter!† â€Å"You don't understand!† whined Pettigrew. â€Å"He would have killed me, Sirius!† â€Å"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!† roared Black. â€Å"DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!† Black and Lupin stood shoulder to shoulder, wands raised. â€Å"You should have realized,† said Lupin quietly, â€Å"if Voldemort didn't kill you, we would. Good-bye, Peter.† Hermione covered her face with her hands and turned to the wall. â€Å"NO!† Harry yelled. He ran forward, placing himself in front Pettigrew, facing the wands. â€Å"You can't kill him,† he said breathlessly. â€Å"You can't.† Black and Lupin both looked staggered. â€Å"Harry, this piece of vermin is the reason you have no parents,† Black snarled. â€Å"This cringing bit of filth would have seen you die too, without turning a hair. You heard him. His own stinking skin meant more to him than your whole family.† â€Å"I know,† Harry panted. â€Å"We'll take him up to the castle. We'll hand him over to the Dementors†¦He can go to Azkaban†¦but don't kill him.† â€Å"Harry!† gasped Pettigrew, and he flung his arms around Harry's knees. â€Å"You — thank you — it's more than I deserve — thank you –â€Å" â€Å"Get off me,† Harry spat, throwing Pettigrew's hands off him in disgust. â€Å"I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it because — I don't reckon my dad would've wanted them to become killers — just for you.† No one moved or made a sound except Pettigrew, whose breath was coming in wheezes as he clutched his chest. Black and Lupin were looking at each other. Then, with one movement, they lowered their wands. â€Å"You're the only person who has the right to decide, Harry,† said Black. â€Å"But think†¦ think what he did†¦.† â€Å"He can go to Azkaban,† Harry repeated. â€Å"If anyone deserves that place, he does†¦.† Pettigrew was still wheezing behind him. â€Å"Very well,† said Lupin. â€Å"Stand aside, Harry.† Harry hesitated. â€Å"I'm going to tie him up,† said Lupin. â€Å"That's all, I swear.† Harry stepped out of the way. Thin cords shot from Lupin's wand this time, and next moment, Pettigrew was wriggling on the floor, bound and gagged. â€Å"But if you transform, Peter,† growled Black, his own wand pointing at Pettigrew too, â€Å"we will kill you. You agree, Harry?† Harry looked down at the pitiful figure on the floor and nodded so that Pettigrew could see him. â€Å"Right,† said Lupin, suddenly businesslike. â€Å"Ron, I can't mend bones nearly as well as Madam Pomfrey, so I think it's best if we just strap your leg up until we can get you to the hospital wing.† He hurried over to Ron, bent down, tapped Ron's leg with his wand, and muttered, â€Å"Ferula.† Bandages spun up Ron's leg, strapping it tightly to a splint. Lupin helped him to his feet; Ron put his weight gingerly on the leg and didn't wince. â€Å"That's better,† he said. â€Å"Thanks.† â€Å"What about Professor Snape?† said Hermione in a small voice, looking down at Snape's prone figure. â€Å"There's nothing seriously wrong with him,† said Lupin, bending over Snape and checking his pulse. â€Å"You were just a little — overenthusiastic. Still out cold. Er — perhaps it will be best if we don't revive him until we're safety back in the castle. We can take him like this†¦.† He muttered, â€Å"Mobilicorpus.† As though invisible strings were tied to Snape's wrists, neck, and knees, he was pulled into a standing position, head still lolling unpleasantly, like a grotesque puppet. He hung a few inches above the ground, his limp feet dangling. Lupin picked up the Invisibility Cloak and tucked it safely into his pocket. â€Å"And two of us should be chained to this,† said Black, nudging Pettigrew with his toe. â€Å"Just to make sure.† â€Å"I'll do it,† said Lupin. â€Å"And me,† said Ron savagely, limping forward. Black conjured heavy manacles from thin air; soon Pettigrew was upright again, left arm chained to Lupin's right, right arm to Ron's left. Ron's face was set. He seemed to have taken Scabbers's true identity as a personal insult. Crookshanks leapt lightly off the bed and led the way out of the room, his bottlebrush tail held jauntily high.
